The fiber. Cotton grown in the Aegean region has a longer staple than most, so the yarn spun from it has fewer joins and a smoother surface. In a finished towel that shows up as terry that stays soft through washing rather than turning wiry.
Grams per square meter — the weight of the fabric. Around 400–500 GSM gives you a lighter towel that dries fast, which suits gym bags and guest bathrooms. From 600 GSM upward the towel is noticeably plusher and holds more water, but it also takes longer to dry on the rail. Neither is objectively better.
A bath towel is 27x54 inches and is what most people picture. A bath sheet is 35x70 — it wraps all the way around an adult with room to spare. If you have ever finished a shower holding the towel closed with one hand, the sheet is the answer.
Almost always the mill finish, which washes out in one cycle. If it persists, fabric softener is the culprit. The Towel Care Guide covers the vinegar strip that fixes it.
You can, and we would rather you did not. Chlorine bleach breaks down cotton fiber and yellows white terry over repeated use. An oxygen-based product does the same job without the damage.
